Artist Spotlight: Rich Salamander

Today's Artist Spotlight goes to Rich Salamander, who will be showing his unique wire sculptures at ChiPRC on November 7 as part of Art on Ashland. Rich recently co-curated an art show at ChiPRC entitled Proud Moments. He should indeed be proud of all the work he did, because the show was phenomenal! You can view pictures of the set-up here.

Rich Salamander's work exists because of his constant need to draw either with a pen and paper, or with wire. The subjects are stoic characters that observe the viewer as much as they are observed. You may view Rich's website here.

Artist Spotlight: Christopher Berry

Today's featured artist is Christopher Berry, who will be exhibiting November 7 at ChiPRC as part of Art on Ashland. We look forward to seeing his exciting mixed media pieces and photography!

Christopher Berry, originally from Michigan, has always had a creative idea in his head. When his grandmother passed away in 2013, in a way to deal with his grief over her passing, he began to use art as an outlet. Christopher uses mixed media techniques in his pieces to evoke what he is feeling at the moment, whether it be confusion, worry or complete joy. Christopher lives in Chicago with his partner Glenn, his greatest fan!

How does an inventive mixed-media artist get his inspiration? How do a call center and a family tree play into Chris's artistic formation? See the video below for the answers to these questions, as we take you for a visit into Christopher Berry's art studio!

Artist Spotlight: Suk Ja Kang

Today's Art on Ashland artist marries the complex traditions of two cultural meccas: Korea and Chicago. Suk Ja Kang is one half of Cat von Kang Gallery and will be exhibiting there as part of our art walk on November 7. You can check out the gallery's website here and its facebook page here.

Suk Ja Kang immigrated to the United States from South Korea two decades ago, and has been active as an artist and curator ever since. She has exhibited throughout the United States since 1994, and has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants. She earned a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Georgia, and an MFA in Painting from the University of Illinois. Her most recent works draw upon the rich artistic traditions of Korea but are also inspired by the bright colors and frenetic energy of the street art and culture of Chicago. This synthesis is evident in her diverse materials which include rice paper, Sumi ink, spray paint, gold leaf, acrylics, and cosmetics.

Artist Spotlight: Daniel Chesney

Daniel Chesney's painting is smart and self-referential. His quotations include nearly all of European art history, including Romanticism, Impressionism and even contemporary editorial images. Chesney is an autodidact, understanding and assimilating a host of influences. His work avoids, however, the cynical irony that characterizes most Post-modernism, aligning itself with the timeless beauty that inspires every generation. Rich and painterly, Chesney's art transcends its influences even while paying tribute to them.

Daniel will be showing his work at Drama Beauty on November 7 as part of Art on Ashland, the East Village Art Walk.

Artist Spotlight: Cat Zeman

Cat Zeman - "My work is my diary--a visual representation of thoughts and emotions distilled from everyday conversations and experiences with friends, strangers, and in my interior world. Everyday revelations and frantic exclamations are illuminated by bright colors. As a whole, my work is an exploration of those universal truths so central to our shared experience of being human, of inhabiting the current world." See Cat's work on here website here. She will be showing at Cat Von Kang Gallery as part of Art on Ashland.

They're he-ere!

Art on Ashland postcards have arrived, hot off the presses, and they look great! Early next week, you will be able to pick up your own personal copy at your favorite Art on Ashland participating location: ChiPRC, Cat Von Kang Gallery, Drama Beauty, Urban Escape Healing, or Revolution Books!

Artist Spotlight: Terrie Byrne

Terrie Byrne is an artist who experiences life vividly. The tactile impressions and prismatic colors that surround her are a challenge and a joy to transmute into artistic expression. She is an artisan with traditional tools — brushes, tubes of pigment and drawing implements that create smears, dust and stains. Art-making is part of the tactile experience of life, so her tools must be held and felt. Far from being a solitary explorer, Terrie has enjoyed working alongside other artists. She was Lead Organizer for a figure drawing group called Third Thursday Club, and she is co-founder of Northside Independent Artists (NIA).

For Art on Ashland, Terrie will be exhibiting at ChiPRC. You may view her website here.

Artist Spotlight: Victor Alegria

Our Artist Spotlight series continues. Today, we look at another fabulous artist who is participating in Art on Ashland, Victor Alegria. Victor will be showing his work at Revolution Books, so don't miss it!

Victor Alegria has exhibited his paintings and engravings throughout the Chicago area, in Southern California, France, and Mexico. He studied at Taller Mestizarte, Casa de la Cultura Carlos Cortez in Pilsen, and one of his engravings, part of a project commissioned by the National Museum of Mexican Art, is now in the Special Collections Department of the University of Southern California Libraries, along with engravings by other well-known Chicago artists. Another one of his engravings was chosen by world-renowned artist Nicolas de Jesus to be part of a Day of the Dead exhibition in Chicago, Paris, and Oaxaca. More recently, Victor has taken up photography in addition to painting and engraving. Revolution Books will feature a collection of his photographs of the Chicago cityscape, from familiar icons to the unknown, from unexpected angles. Much of his work will be available for sale as well.

Artist Spotlight: Abbey Denlinger

Today, we begin our Artist Spotlight series! Check back each day to read about another artist who will be showing their work at Art on Ashland, November 7th. Today's artist, Abbey Denlinger, will be featured at Urban Escape Healing.

Abbey Denlinger (Abbey Aura) has been exploring her creative passions since she picked up a crayon. She began studying art in 2004 and began her formal art education at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. Since then she has studied multiple art forms and she graduated with her degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) in 2012. After graduation, Denlinger pursued her calling to be a multi-disciplinary artist, and formally trained in the fields of graphic design and illustration at the College of DuPage.

Denlinger currently works as a full-time freelance graphic designer and painter, and simultaneously pursues her independent and collaborative creative passions. Abbey owns and operates her own business, where she produces custom hand-painted and screen-printed clothing and accessories. She also works with multiple graphic design clients and creates digital album artworks and materials for music artists including Manic Focus and Future Rock and The Floozies. As an independent artist, Abbey produces live-paintings for musical artists and events across the country and has been involved in the design and implementation of several art installations.

Denlinger also has extensive experience in theatrical stage and set design. She has worked on set construction and prop design for over 30 theatrical productions and has designed and painted large-scale theatrical sets and backdrop murals. Denlinger’s creative vision work takes the form of multiple mediums and utilizes an alchemical process of weaving together ethereal and worldly subject matter. Denlinger utilizes a combination of her unique technical background and her artistic passion to focus on a creative process that produces visionary work with positive and transformative intentions.

You may check out Abbey's website here.

Spotlight on ChiPRC

Today, we turn our attention to Chicago Publishers Resource Center, or ChiPRC. In addition to being an Art on Ashland partner, ChiPRC is a versatile studio space for writers, artists and more. There is a community of creative people that hosts regular readings, workshops and events, many of them geared toward self-publishers. Guest instructors and artists also design events, including creative writing workshops, web design classes and podcast recordings, to name just a few.

ChiPRC is a natural fit for Art on Ashland, because it has already hosted several art shows, including two exhibits curated by Northside Independent Artists (NIA). Its big white walls are perfect for showing off photography, fine art and graphic design. We look forward to seeing the pool of talent ChiPRC will be bringing in for our art walk on November 7!

Spotlight on Revolution Books

It's time for another Art on Ashland spotlight! Today, we focus on Revolution Books, your source for literature and programming relating to politics and social justice. The space is not only a bookstore, with a range of novels, non-fiction works, and poetry available; it is also a community space, bringing together citizens mobilized by a common vision.

Revolution Books is one of the most active spaces I have seen, hosting regular book clubs, film screenings, and author events. The staff regularly travel outside the bookstore, engaging with communities all over the nation. It is exciting to think that Revolution Books is able to bring bits and pieces of our neighborhood with them!

We look forward to seeing the work that Revolution Books is bringing to Art on Ashland! It will no doubt be inspiring and thought-provoking.

Spotlight on Urban Escape Healing

Art on Ashland has man generous contributors. These organizations provide exciting services for East Village locals and Chicagoans year-round. Today, we would like to spotlight another of those organizations.

We all love Chicago, but I think we would all admit that the hustle and bustle can take the wind out of our sails from time to time. We need a place to rest and recharge our batteries. Urban Escape Healing is just such a place. The term "Urban Escape" brings to mind a gentle oasis in an environment that can sometimes be noisy and overwhelming.

Urban Escape provides energizing services such as yoga, reiki, massage and more, as well as wide variety of workshops and classes for people of all ages and backgrounds. In a supportive group setting or one-on-one, clients can tap into their own ability to rebalance and recharge. For more information, view Urban Escape Healing's website here.

We look forward to seeing the beautiful and inspiring art that Urban Escape's compassionate community brings to Art on Ashland!

Welcome, Cat Von Kang!

All of us participating in Art on Ashland wish a warm welcome to Cat Von Kang Gallery, which will join us in showing art on November 7! Take a moment to view Cat Von Kang's website here and facebook page here, and you will see why we are so excited to be working with this fresh and professional gallery!

Cat Von Kang actually represents the work of two excellent artists, Suk Ja Kang and Cat Zeman. They clearly inspire one another, filling their space with brilliant color, witty text and expressive forms. According to their bios, Cat pulls inspiration from within, treating her art practices almost as personal journalism. Suk Ja says she is inspired both by the art traditions of Korea and the urban graffiti of Chicago.

Even a cursory glance at the pieces on their website and facebook page show that Suk Ja and Cat are artists of the highest caliber. We are honored to have Cat Von Kang Gallery participating in Art on Ashland!
